Stage 1: Brainstorming

Felicia was contacted by Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Gustavo Vazquez about creating a book in response to a collaborative video already underway. The challenge was to find the relationship between these two time-based media. In July 2007 the three of them held their first meeting in San Francisco. This led to a series of brainstorming sessions held in either San Francisco or Santa Cruz that came to include Jennifer González and Zachary Watkins. A sample printed page was delivered in May 2009 to the group. By fall 2010 the direction and scope of the project were focused and the printing of the book had begun.

Stage 2: Rydell Visual Arts Fellowship and the book box

Receiving the Rydell Visual Arts Fellowship in March 2008 allowed Felicia to develop a prototype of the hi-tech/low-tech book box and begin exploring seven page treatments and the binding structure for the book. These were displayed at the Museum of Art & History in Santa Cruz in the Rydell Fellowship exhibition from December 2009–March 2010.

Stage 3: DRAwINGS

Between September 2009 and June 2010 Felicia completed a series of 100 sketches drawn from Gustavo's photos of Chicano juju in Guillermo's collection. These form several layers of the prints on each of the 15 pages of the accordian-fold book.

STAGE 4: Myth of fingerprints

In summer 2010 Felicia began printing the book. When complete Felicia named this stage, "The Myth of Fingerprints." It establishes the color palette for the book and begins to explore the concept of identity central to the performance texts at the core of the book.

Stage 5: Photo Shoot

January 22, 2011 all five collaborators met at ATA in San Francisco for a photo shoot with photographer David Crane. These photos appear in the book and as the cover for the DVD; they are also intended for publicity.
