Felicia Rice has been awarded a $20,000 Rydell Visual Arts Fellowship. Rice is one of four Santa Cruz County artists selected from a pool of 46 visual artists that will receive the grants to pursue their work in 2008-09. The Rydell fellowships were established by long-time Santa Cruz cultural icons Roy and Frances Rydell and are administered by the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County. They are awarded solely on artistic merit by a panel of arts professionals from outside the Santa Cruz area.

Felicia has big plans for the next two years. She will add two new works to the Chicano/Latino Series. While she will continue to experiment with new materials and digital technology in conjunction with handset type and letterpress printing, she’ll also contribute her own drawings for the first time to a Moving Parts Press collaborative bookwork.

El Alfabeto Animado / The Lively Alphabet (work-in-progress)

The first project grew out of a dream. It is the fourth book in Moving Parts Press's Chicano/Latino Series, an alphabet book in Spanish, English and Quechua. The book is populated by hand-knit finger puppets set in scenes drawn and printed at Moving Parts Press on a rainbow of cloth from Cuzco.

Felicia is working with Peruvian-American children’s book author Monica Brown and designer Katie Jennings to transform the original oversized lumpy and soft book object into a trade edition for children here in the US and in Peru. They plan to donate 1000 books to organizations in Peru that promote literacy.

Documentado/Undocumented (work-in-progress)

A large part of the fellowship money will support the initial stages of the fifth book in the series, a project in which she is collaborating once more with performance artist and writer Guillermo Gomez-Pena and art historian and critic Jennifer Gonzalez, as well as filmmaker Gustavo Vazquez and sound artist and engineer Zachary Watkins.

The book will be housed in a high tech metal box containing Guillermo and Gustavo’s video on DVD, an altar, and ritual items such as custom-made Mexican wrestling masks. Opening the box will trigger Zachary’s composition. The book also has a sound component accompanying texts by Guillermo and Felicia's own imagery in the form of relief prints.
